D365 Business Central : Customise Field Editability from UI

The public preview for Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 release wave 2 (BC23) is already available, and it brings many exciting new features. This time, we will talk about one of the new features: Customise Field Editability from UI. This feature allows users to toggle between making a field editable or non-editable using Personalisation. Before we go into the details, let’s first talk about Personalisation.

Understanding Personalisation

Personalisation is a feature in D365 Business Central, designed to empower users by enabling them to tailor their workspace to match their needs and preferences. With personalisation, users can customise their workspace, such as show or hide fields from a page, rearrange fields or actions, adjust column width, change the freeze pane, and more. Users can use this to improve their readability and optimise data entry.

To begin personalising your workspace, navigate to ‘Settings’ and click ‘Personalize’ in the top right corner.

Settings > Personalise

A Personalising banner will then appear, allowing you to start personalisation.

It’s important to note that Personalisation is localised to your workspace and doesn’t impact the settings of other users.

Personalise Profile

For administrators, you can personalise profiles in a manner similar to individual user personalisation. All users assigned to the profile will inherit the same personalisation settings.

Customise Field Editability from UI

Now, let’s dive into the main topic: the ability to customise field editability directly from the UI in Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Release Wave 2. This feature allows you to make fields editable or non-editable by using personalisation. Because we are using personalisation, no development, extension, or permission sets are required.

As an added layer of security, the context menu item for customising field editability is automatically disabled if the application developer has explicitly set the field to be non-editable through code.

Personalise Editability

Powerful feature. With this new feature, customers can self-serve their need to make specific fields editable without relying on their partners’ support.
