D365 Business Central : 5 Random Trivia about Business Central
Dynamics 365 Business Central is a complex software that continuously evolves, making it very challenging to know and understand all its features. Some features often go unnoticed, either due to insufficient documentation, being buried deep within the extensive documentation, or no longer relevant for the latest version. Here are five lesser-known yet interesting things about Dynamics 365 Business Central that may have been too brief to warrant their standalone posts, yet are still worth highlighting. Let’s dive in!
1) Olympic Trivia in Cronus Demo
Did you know that the items in the Cronus Demo environment are named after Olympic years and locations? To distinguish between Summer and Winter Olympics, the items are suffixed with either “-S” or “-W.”
2) Dimension Set ID magic number is 480
All Dimension Set ID fields that aren’t part of the table buffer are assigned the field ID 480.
Dimension Set Entry Table ID is also numbered 480.
Interestingly, there’s even a hardcoded value of 480 in Codeunit 8614, “Config. XML Exchange.”
When creating a new table and implementing Dimension Set ID, it is probably best to use Field ID 480.
3) Ellipsis Property
Ever noticed the ellipsis (…) appended to the caption of an action? This is due to a property called Ellipsis on the Page Action / Custom Action. Enabling this property will append an ellipsis (…) to the caption on a command button or menu item. An ellipsis indicates to users that selecting the button or action will reveal additional choices.
Below is the code sample on General Ledger Setup.
This feature isn’t widely utilised in the base application, and its usage needs to be more consistent.
4) Drag and Drop
The latest BC version allows you to drag and drop files into the upload dialog. However, did you know you can do it on the previous version too? When the Choose File dialog box appears (before the Windows file picker), you can drag and drop your file onto the “Choose…” button. The file will get imported straight away.
